19th.February, Antarctica, Port Lockroy – Gentoo Penguins
The morning landing was to be at Port Lockroy at the Southern end of Goudier Island near Doumer Island on the other side of the Neumayer Channel from the large Anvers Island. It is a historic site and part of the main hut has been preserved in its original state as a museum. On the opposite side of the natural harbor there was a colony of Gentoo penguins, which provided us great amusement. I show a few of the funny penguin pictures, but one really needs to see a whole sequence to understand what is going on. Here a perhaps a parent penguin was trying to help its chick over a lump of ice in a puddle, but they may both have been young ones. I suppose that I should have tried taking a short film. It was also interesting to see a complete whale skeleton lying on the beach. Only standing next to it does one get a true appreciation of its enormous size.
