Ibex near the Refuge Robert Blanc

5th July, Col de la Croix 2443m – Les Chapieux 1554m -Refuge des Mottets, Ville des Glaciers 1870m, 2.5 h

The next morning revealed a further worsening of the weather with the hut enveloped in thick mist and light rainfall. Fortunately we had only a grassy walk downhill to the hamlet of Les Chapieux (1554m) in front of us, since we had divided the previous day’s stage into two. As we reached the valley floor the sun appeared but we still took the small bus along a lane in the narrow trench of the Valleé des Glaciers in order to arrive at the Refuge des Mottets (1870m) as soon as possible. I stayed at the friendly refuge for a rest afternoon, but the others wanted to take advantage of the somewhat better weather and walk on the opposite side of the valley towards the Refuge Robert Blanc. Peter climbed highest and was rewarded by sightings of ibex and marmots.
