Tourism, which has overtaken bananas as Costa Rica&#8217;s leading foreign exchange earner, bolsters the economy. A quarter of the land has protected status; the beauty of<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> the<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> rain forest<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> with its<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> exotic display of flora and fauna is <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">the main attraction of this<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">country<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal-P\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: normal;\"><span class=\"Normal-H\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">The span of the Costa Rican territory, from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, is <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">just <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">200 miles<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> but t<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">he variety of landscapes and microclimates that can be enjoyed <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">even <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">a short visit<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> make <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">it<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> a paradise destination. The Pacific coast does have some big tourist centers and its beaches are very popular for surfing, but there are also very remote areas where the nature has been well preserved. Considered one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world, Costa Rica is divided in 20 natural parks, 8 biological reserves, and a series of protected areas that captivate ecotourism lovers. The variety of activities includes horseback riding, hiking mountainous paths in the cloud forests, and guided bird-watching tours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal-P\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: normal;\"><span class=\"Normal-H\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Costa Rica possesses the greatest density of species in the world<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> It has been stated that Costa Rica may contain as much as 6% of the world&#8217;s plant and animal species. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">he mo<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> impressive plants range from huge <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">ficus<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> trees with epiphytes abounding on their limbs to approximately 1500 different orchids. The animals are equally as impressive, whether it&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">the<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> jaguar (the largest cat in the New World), the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">acrobatic <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">spider monkeys<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">, or the wonderful birds like the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">mythical <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">green <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">quetzal <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">and<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">the noisy <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">scarlet macaws<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> The amphibians <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">reptiles <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">are also <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">not<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">able<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">; the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">tiny <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">poison<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">dart frogs with their bright colors catch <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">one\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> attention, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">as do<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">large green iguanas<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"PlainText-P\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: normal;\"><span class=\"PlainText-H\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">My Journey<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"PlainText-P\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: normal;\"><span class=\"PlainText-H\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">I stayed at 3 luxury lodges similar to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">those I knew from safari tours to Africa<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> but in the jungle rather than open savanna. One was at 2500m height <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">above sea level <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">and it was very cold there at night and in the early morning when we went to see the fabulous quetzal bird. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">In the dense jungle o<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">ne does not see any big cats or anything else much of size. The largest animals I saw were a group of peccaries, a sort of wild pig. Tapirs are rarely seen and jaguars do exist but are not see<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> by tourists<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">. O<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">ne guide <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">even admitted<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> that she had never seen any sort of cat in the 10 years she had been there. Of the 4 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">species<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> of monkeys <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">native to Costa Rica <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">I saw <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">three<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">: howler, spider and squirrel monkeys, missing the capuchin monkeys although they are often seen. I did see both sorts of sloths, 2 and 3 toed<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">, agoutis and coatis<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">The wildlife viewing<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> is mostly about the birds of which the scarlet macaws and the large toucans are the most spectacular. I would have liked a better picture of a macaw but I <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">did see<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> them several times<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> sometimes flying directly overhead. Two species of the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">minute<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> poison-<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">dart<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> frogs and one poisonous snake were spotted, along with iguanas and lizards.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"PlainText-P\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: normal;\"><span class=\"PlainText-H\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">The first lodge was not very far from a road and did not have very extensive grounds, so I made day excursions to two other private parks, one of which was a biological research station. The mountain <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">lodge was an ideal place to see many species of humming birds and other small birds as well as the quetzal with its very long tail feathers. One trip took me to the top of a nearby mountain at 3400m above the tree-line but this did not really reveal anything <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">exceptionally<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> interesting.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"PlainText-P\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: normal;\"><span class=\"PlainText-H\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">The last lodge where I spent most of the second week is beautifully situated <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">on <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">the Pacific coast <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">150m above a fantastic beach which is completely deserted. I could look out from my terrace across the swimming pool to the sea and in the evening watch the sunset. There were enough prepared private tracks in the jungle to occupy the week<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> sometimes with a guide or alone. One route was along a riverbed down to the beach and others led to small waterfalls the biggest being 25m high. There one could go into the water to cool down.
