18<\/span>th<\/span>.January, <\/span>Trogon Lodge<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

T<\/span>he long transfer to <\/span>Trogon Lodge <\/span>was quicker than I had expected and I arrived <\/span>in the <\/span>early afternoon havin<\/span>g<\/span> left at 9.45. <\/span>We<\/span> returned to San Jose by a different road through <\/span>the Braulio Carrillo<\/span>N<\/span>ational <\/span>P<\/span>ark but it was less scenic<\/span> than the outward journey <\/span>because of the heavy traffic and the high trees on each side <\/span>which <\/span>obscured any view. After <\/span>passing through <\/span>San Jose<\/span> and Cartago at about <\/span>1000m<\/span> above sea level<\/span>, we ascended to a high ridge at 3000m for much of the rest of the journey. The final part was a steep descent on a rough road to the lodge at 2500m. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The cabins <\/span>we<\/span>re laid out in pairs on the steep hil<\/span>l<\/span>side between the road and a river with small waterfalls. There <\/span>we<\/span>re several ponds full of trout in the beautifully laid out grounds. Here the climate <\/span>wa<\/span>s much cooler of course<\/span> and some of t<\/span>he garden flowers know<\/span>n in Europe such as <\/span>agapanthus, lilies, fuchsia, <\/span>gunneria<\/span> and red hot poker<\/span> thrive well<\/span>. The cabins have gas-fire heating but in the afternoon in the sun it becomes quite hot. The first afternoon <\/span>I <\/span>made a walk past the waterfalls and through the jungle on the other side of the valley. There <\/span>we<\/span>re lots of bromeliads, creepers, ferns and lichen but <\/span>I did <\/span>no<\/span>t<\/span>see any <\/span>orchids in flower.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
