Magnificent Hummingbird<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

19<\/span>th<\/span>. <\/span>January, <\/span>San <\/span>Gerado<\/span> de <\/span>Dota<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>t 5.30 the next morning <\/span>a group <\/span>of seven<\/span> guests met in the lodge to start<\/span> the Quetzal tour. <\/span>It was still fairly dark and very cold and <\/span>the guide <\/span>spotted a small patch of frost! The search for this mythical bird with its enormously long tail feathers <\/span>was quite suc<\/span>c<\/span>essfu<\/span>l<\/span>. We saw plenty of quetzals mostly from the road just above the lodge but the lighting <\/span>was<\/span> not good for photography. Some people took photos through the gu<\/span>ide\u2019s telescope with their smartphones which seemed to work surprisingly well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After breakfast I spent the morning in the garden and went on the birdwatching tour in the afternoon. This time there <\/span>I <\/span>was <\/span>the <\/span>only <\/span>participant <\/span>and the tour consisted only of driving a short distance down the road and looking for <\/span>the <\/span>birds in the bushes. The young man guide of course saw <\/span>a lot more<\/span> tha<\/span> I would have seen myself and I <\/span>was able to photograph several humming birds, e<\/span>ven one on a nest but in a very dark place. There were <\/span>many <\/span>other birds the most attractive being the <\/span>Flame-<\/span>coloured<\/span> Tanager<\/span>but nothing larger <\/span>such as<\/span> a toucan.<\/span> The birds shown are: <\/span>Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher<\/span>, <\/span>White-throated Mountain-gem<\/span>, <\/span>Volcano Hummingbird<\/span>, <\/span>Magnificent Hummingbird<\/span>, <\/span>Fiery-throated Hummingbird<\/span>, <\/span>Torrent <\/span>Tyrannulet<\/span>, <\/span>Yellow-<\/span>thighed<\/span> Finch<\/span>, <\/span>Rufous-collared Sparrow<\/span> and <\/span>Collared Redstart<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
