font-size: 12pt;\">exists<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> a forgotten area of the west Alps despite the fact that it is only 100 km away from the capitol Turin. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">In the<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> remote and rugged Valle <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Maira<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">, which occupies an enchanting fold of the Cottian Alps, the Occitan language still lives on \u2013 often in song \u2013 and formerly deserted mountain villages are being born again, thanks to the renovation of a network of ancient paths <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">known as the \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Percorsi<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Occitani<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">which circumnavigate the valley<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">The abandoned hamlets, sunlit forests and expansive pastures make up a picture that remains in the memory of every hiker <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">who visits the valley<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal-P\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: normal;\"><span class=\"Normal-H\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">On <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">the<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">routes<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">one<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> see<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">, again and again, overgrown paths and tracks, the remainders of old stone walls, chapels and churches <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">even <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">with astonishingly beautiful frescoes in the most secluded areas. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">It is clear<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> that these areas must have once been a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">well <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">populated<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> and i<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">n old accounts, one can read how the citizens of this valley worked hard to wrest their meagre existence from the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">land<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">. As a result, the young people have nearly always moved away, especially in the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">mid 20th<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> century, post-industrialization. In the community of Marmora, there are only 25 residents, spread among the 17 hamlets. In 1900, there were still over 1000. As the land was farmed less and less, acres of it reverted to pasture lands and lay fallow. This cultural landscape, which has been reclaimed by nature, emanates a fascination that affects <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">every<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> hiker. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal-P\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: normal;\"><span class=\"Normal-H\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Linking <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">once <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">picturesque hamlets and villages, many of the paths criss-crossing this extraordinarily beautiful high valley are paved in stone at lower levels \u2013 where mixed forest is interspersed with Mediterranean vegetation \u2013 and are often bordered by crumbling dry stone walls, while the rocky alpine landscape of the higher slopes is dotted with plentiful springs and lakes. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">L<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">ong ago glaciers shrouded the highest of the north faces, and the summits, though mostly free of snow in high summer, are impressive.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> The available accommodation mostly<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> converted from old mountain dwellings allow<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">one<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> to enjoy this wonderful area and its magnificent views to the full, savouring <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">warm hospitality and delicious Occitan cuisine each evening.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal-P\" style=\"margin-bottom: 6pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: normal;\"><span class=\"Normal-H\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">My brother and I followed the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Percorsi<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Occitani<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> taking the route and stages described in the guide \u2018Antipasti und Alte <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Wege<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">, Valle <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Maira<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\"> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Wandern<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">im<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">andern<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Piemont<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2019, Ursula Bauer und J\u00fcrg <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">Frischknecht<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 12pt;\">.
