The <\/span>Alta Via Trail 1, <\/span>also <\/span>known as the Alta Via dei Giganti, or \u201cthe giants\u2019 trail\u201d, is a trekking route through incomparable scenery, across the foothills of some of the highest peaks in Europe such as <\/span>Monte Rosa<\/a>, the <\/span>Matterhorn<\/a> and <\/span>Mont Blanc<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This itinerary offers, <\/span>as well as <\/span>superb examples of natural alpine architecture (including the elegant pyramid of the Matterhorn), matchless specimens of rural architecture that are inextricably linked with the life of the alpine pasturelands, such as the traditional Walser buildings in the Gressoney Valley and the upper reaches of the Ayas Valley. The route leads from <\/span>Donnas<\/span> to <\/span>Courmayeur<\/span>, with <\/span>17 daily stages<\/span> that require <\/span>4<\/span>–<\/span>6<\/span> hours walking time<\/span>, offering stopping points for all needs: camping sites, huts, refuges, hotels and hostels. The routes descend into the valley at the end of <\/span>some<\/span> stage<\/span>, where it is possible to use the services provided by each of the villages or interrupt your journey and return to the central by <\/span>valley <\/span>bus. Theroute can be walked in the summer months and crosses medium and <\/span>high altitude<\/span> mountain areas, through meadows and pasturelands, woodlands and rocky outcrops, maintaining an average altitude of around 2,000 m. and often touching almost 3,000 m (on Col <\/span>di <\/span>Vesonna<\/span> the route reaches 2,<\/span>78<\/span>3<\/span> m.).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I had <\/span>walked the first part of this route South of the Monte Rosa range with the <\/span>sportclub<\/span> group in 2002 returning to Switzerland with a crossing of the glaciated 3290m high <\/span>Theodule<\/span> Pass.<\/span> Two years later <\/span>together with my brother I <\/span>recrossed<\/span> the <\/span>Theodule<\/span> Pass and continued the route Westwards almost as far as Courmayeur. Our route was:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

26<\/span>th<\/span>. August<\/span>, <\/span>St.Oyen<\/span> – <\/span>St.Rhemy<\/span> – La <\/span>Cantine<\/span>d’Aoste<\/span>, 2263m (<\/span>lu<\/span>nch<\/span>) (ca 3 <\/span>h<\/span>.) – Grand <\/span>St.Bernhard<\/span>, 2460m (Total 4 <\/span>h<\/span>.) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We had <\/span>mostly <\/span>good weather f<\/span>or six days but this changed dramatically soon after we left <\/span>St.Oyen<\/span> and we sought refuge in the <\/span>Cantine<\/span>d’Aoste<\/span>. This unattractive but historic building on the South of the Grand <\/span>St.Bernhard<\/span> pass was supposedly visited by Napoleon before his battle with the Italian army. It now offers some accommodation and refreshments and we were kindly given a sumptuous meal by the lady owner.<\/span> After which in view of the snowfall higher up the pass we abandoned our plans to walk any further. The final day would have taken us via the <\/span>Fen\u00eatre<\/span> de Ferret <\/span>(<\/span>2698m<\/span>)<\/span>back into the Val de <\/span>Ferrett<\/span> in Switzerland. There one joins part of the Tour du Mont Blanc which we completed much later in 2014.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
