Both Northern and Southern species of Right Whale normally live in polar waters, but in summer they can be found in temperate and subpolar seas. Calving occurs in shallow bays near to the coast and is followed by a mating ritual. They are huge creatures measuring around 15 to 17 meters in length and weighing up to 100 tons. Despite their massive bulk they are incredibly active, with breaching, lob-tailing and flipper-slapping all relatively common. We were treated to displays of them shooting in the air and diving backwards with an enormous crash, one being so close to the boat that I could not photograph it properly. Later they were silhouetted against a beautiful sunset sky. The sea elephants we saw the next day were also very impressive. The huge dominant males are seven times as large as the females and demonstrate their territorial rights by rocking backwards and forwards and bellowing. We also saw some guanachos hare-like maras and a small colony of Magellan penguins. On the third day we had a short walk along the cliffs near Puerto Pyramides before leaving, then lunch at a fish restaurant by the seaside and a visit to a dinosaur museum on the way to the airport. ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder

Bahia Blanca – Peninsula Valdes

Halbinsel Valdés, Wal Beobachtungen am Patagonische Atlantikküste Zwei Übernachtungen in Puerto Pirámide und zweieinhalb Tage Naturgenuss pur.
