21st. August, Cablecar to Trockener Steg 2939m – Theodule Pass and Hut 3295m. – Cervinia 2006m – Fenêtre de Cignina 2441m – Rifugio Barmasse 2157m (ca 7 h.).

We had spent a day in Zermatt and with an excursion to the nearby Z’mutt alp before taking the Trockener Steg cable car early the next morning. From the station one soon reaches the ice and snow or the Theodule glacier and remains on it all the way to the Theodule Pass and Hut, at 3295m the highest point of our route. Here one is surrounded by several famous 4000er peaks of the Swiss Alps, most notably of course the Matterhorn. There follows a long descent over scree slopes and some rock to the ski-resort of Cervina. First continuing down the valley we followed a path over the Fenêtre de Cignana to reach the Alta Via Uno and the Refugio Barmasse. On the map below the Theodule Pass can be seen in the top-right corner. The Alta Via Uno is shown as a red line and the Rifugio Barmasse is marked in red.
