08-23 Vessonaz

starting the secured passage

23rd. August, Refugio Reboulaz, Leseney – Colle di Torray, 2775m – Rifugio Cuney 2652m – Col di Chaleby, 2653m – Col di Vessonaz, 2793m – Close, Valpelline Valley, 1456m (ca 8 h.) Bus to Aosta.

First we had to make our own breakfast and tidy up the hut before leaving. Col Torray is soon reached and we arrived safely at the Rifugio Cuney. Here we greeted the warden and visited the adjacent oratory church.

Then follows a narrow path across an exposed rock face. Fortunately this is secured by chains. The route to the Col de Vessonaz passes through beautiful scenery with several small lakes surrounded by cotton grass. Mont Blanc could be clearly seen in the distance. There also a small refuge here just below the head of the pass. The long descent down into the Vapelline Valley passes through several vegetation zones from bare rock to forest before reaching the road at Close which consists only of a few houses and a bus stop. We could take a bus to Aosta and spend the night there at the Hotel Grand Paradiso.
