22nd. August, Rifugio Barmasse 2157m – Fenêtre d’Ersa, 2290m – Fenêtre de Tzan, 2736m – Leseney, Refugio Luca Reboulaz, 2588m (ca 6 Std.).
A short ascent brought us to the Fenêtre d’Ersa where there were again fine views of the Matterhorn now in perfect weather. Here one leaves Val Tourneche and enters the top end of Val St.Barthelemy which is crossed via two higher passes, the Fenêtre de Tzan being the first. We had seen a heard of cows descending into the valley, but there were still some grazing at the Lac de Tzan. From the highest point of the pass many peaks of the Pennine Alps come into view from the less familiar Southern side. We had been informed by someone along the route that it was possible to stay at the Refugio Reboulaz. Since it was getting late we decided to do so rather than continue to the Rifugio Cuney as planned. There is no resident warden but we could find sufficient food to prepare a meal. This earlier stop gave us time to have a swim in the picturesque Lac de Luseney.
